DANGEROUS JUNCTION AT
JOHNSTOWN ROAD AND POTTERY ROAD

November 2004

After the recent up-grade of Johnstown Road some concerned motorists contacted local Councillor Cormac Devlin to highlight the dangers faced at this junction. Councillor Devlin placed the following question down at an Area Committee Meeting:

1) Re-install filter light at junction of Pottery Road & Johnstown Road

Question:
To ask the Manager to re-install a filter light at the junction of Pottery Road and Johnstown Road after several near misses which were brought to my attention?

Reply:
The Council’s traffic signal Maintenance Contractor has been requested to quote for the provision of a right-turn filter into Pottery Road and it is expected that work will commence shortly.

When these lights were erected, green arrows were incorrectly provided to control traffic turning left into Pottery Road.  These have now been replaced by flashing amber filter arrows to indicate to traffic turning left into Pottery Road that it must yield to traffic from the opposite direction turning right.  A yield sign will also be installed to reinforce this message.

2) New traffic light poles moved closer to junction of Pottery Road & Johnstown Road

Question:
To ask the Manager to have the new traffic light poles moved closer to the junction of Pottery Road and Johnstown Road as many motorists believe that these are a new set of lights having run the junction. This should be dealt with as a matter of urgency as there have been several close incidents between cars at this junction?

Reply:
Following negotiations conducted by the Council’s Road Design and Construction Section the traffic signal poles were moved further from the junction as a result of accommodation works for adjacent residents.

The traffic signal poles have been located slightly away from the normal location to avoid the driveways of these houses.  In response to driver confusion, one of the signal heads was removed in early September.  The situation is still being monitored.
