BACKGROUND:

Each year Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is obliged to seek the views from the public about the Local Property Tax (LPT). The Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 which gives councillors the power toincreas or decrease the basic rate by +/- 15% or leave it unchanged. A link to some Frequently Asked Questions about the LPT.

This decision to vary the LPT will be made by councillors at their September 2018 meeting. The Council must notify the Revenue Commissioners in advance of striking their own Budget for the coming financial year, 2019.  Below is an extract from the September 2017 Council meeting and a report on the estimated LPT collected at the time by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council:

In 2017, the amount collected by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council was€51.824,546m
Less 20% for the National Equalisation Fund -€10.364,909
LPT 2018 Allocation€41,459,637

Statutory Self Financing Housing & Transportation Schemes   €22,823,809

"During the 2016 consultation, a mere 6 submissions were received by the Council. During 2017 the number increased to 76 submissions so I am hopeful that this year we will be able to increase this figure. It is essential that the Council and councillors hear the views of local residents. I would like to hear from as many residents as possible to ensure that we have as wide a consultation process as possible, please inform your friends and neighbours. Since the introduction of the LPT, I along with my Fianna Fáil colleagues have consistantly argued for the LPT to be reduced in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown ny the maximum 15%" said Cormac.
